Sinchon, Ewha & Yeonhui-dong Restaurants

Dining in Seodaemun-gu divides into Sinchon and Ewha in front of Yonsei and Ewha Womans universities, Yeonhui-dong where restaurants sit among houses, and the Seodaemun Station and Chungjeong-ro area next to downtown. It connects to Hongdae (Mapo-gu) on foot but feels different. After Korean food, Japanese restaurants are the largest group in EatHub's listings here, which makes tonkatsu, ramen, sushi and izakaya easy to find.

A guide to restaurants and bars around the Sinchon and Ewha campuses, Yeonhui-dong, and Seodaemun Station and Chungjeong-ro.

Sinchon and Ewha are one walkable campus district

Sinchon and Ewha Womans University stations are one stop apart on Line 2, so you can walk Yeonse-ro and the alleys in front of Ewha in one outing. Student demand keeps a balanced mix of solo-friendly dishes such as tonkatsu, ramen, sushi and pho alongside barbecue houses.

Lunch tends to spike briefly around noon with class schedules and then clear. In the evening the crowd moves to grill houses and izakaya in the alleys behind Yeonse-ro, so arrive early in the evening for a calmer meal.

Yeonhui-dong is a neighborhood of Chinese food and small restaurants

Yeonhui-dong has long been known for Chinese restaurants run by ethnic Chinese families in Korea. Options range from dumplings and jjajangmyeon or jjamppong to full course menus, and many people take a short bus ride from Sinchon specifically to eat Chinese food here.

Izakaya and small restaurants are scattered among the houses, which makes the area calmer than the campus streets. Many have few seats, so check reservations or the waiting system before a weekend dinner.

Seodaemun Station, Chungjeong-ro and Hongje-dong

Close to the Gwanghwamun business district, the Seodaemun Station and Chungjeong-ro area has long-running restaurants serving gomtang, set meals and haejangguk to the lunch crowd. It fits well after visiting Gyeongbokgung or Seodaemun Prison History Hall.

Hongje-dong and Hongeun-dong are neighborhood areas where places that have served one dish for years stand out, such as cod stew, chilled chicken noodles and barbecue. They pair well with a walk on Bukhansan or Ansan.
