The most international district in Seoul

Itaewon grew around Seoul's foreign resident communities, which is why cuisines that are hard to find elsewhere in Korea are often cooked here by people who grew up with them. Turkish, Thai, Indian, Middle Eastern, and African restaurants sit within a few streets of each other.

Halal-certified and pork-free restaurants are also concentrated in Itaewon and Hannam-dong, particularly around the Seoul Central Mosque.

Itaewon and Hannam are not the same

The area around Itaewon Station is casual and stays lively late. Prices span a wide range and it is an easy place to eat alone.

Move toward Hannam-dong and Gyeongnidan-gil and the tone settles. Tables are further apart and rooms are quieter, which suits a meal built around conversation. Further down toward Yongsan, large malls and hotel restaurants enter the mix.

Worth knowing before you go

Itaewon is hilly. Gyeongnidan-gil in particular is a genuine climb, and walking it costs more energy than the map suggests. Comfortable shoes and light bags help.

Weekend nights are crowded. For a quieter meal, come on a weekday evening or early on a weekend. Choosing between Itaewon Station and Hangangjin Station on Line 6 based on your destination can save you an entire hill.
